Problem 1 (Fig 1)

Two solid cylindrical rods AB and BC are welded together at B and loaded as shown. Knowing that the average normal stress must not exceed 175 MPa in rod AB and 150 MPa in rod BC, determine the smallest allowable values of d1 and d2.

Problem 2 (Fig 2)

In the hanger shown, the upper portion of link ABC is 3/8 in. thick and the lower portions are each ¼ in. thick. Epoxy resin is used to bond the upper and lower portions together at B. The pin at A is of 3/8-in. diameter while a 1/4-in.-diameter pin is used at C. Determine

(a) the largest normal stress in link ABC,

(b) the average shearing stress on the bonded surfaces at B,

(c) the bearing 6 in. stress in the link at C.

Problem 3 (Fig 3)

The 4-mm diameter cable BC is made of a steel with E = 200 GPa.  Knowing that the maximum stress in the cable must not exceed 190 MPa and that the elongation of the cable must not exceed 6 mm, find the maximum load P that can be applied.

Problem 4 (Fig 4)

Determine the values of the stress in portions AC and CB of the steel bar, when T of the bar is –50 oF, knowing that a close fit exists at both of the rigid supports when T = 75 oF.  Use E = 29 x 106 psi and a = 6.5 x 106/oF for steel.

Problem 5 (Fig 5)

A rectangular block of material with modulus of rigidity G = 90 ksi is bonded to two rigid horizontal plates.

The lower plate is fixed, while the upper plate is subjected to a horizontal force P.

Knowing that the upper plate moves through 0.04 in. under the action of the force, determine a) the average shearing strain in the material, and b) the force P exerted on the plate.
